Fate after Death in Medieval Germany. The tradition of the Visio Pauli in Middle High German Literature: Sources, Analogues and Influences

Curriculum Vitae

Concetta Giliberto is Associate Professor in Germanic Philology at the University of Palermo and teaches within the frame of the History Degree Course there. In 1991, she took a degree in Foreign Languages and Literature at the University of Palermo and, in 1997, completed her PhD in Germanic Philology at the University of Florence with a dissertation on the Frisian runic tradition.

She has worked in the field of runology and on the relationship between runic writing and ancient Germanic cultures, paying particular attention to the Old Frisian and Anglo-Saxon tradition. She has studied eschatological literature in the Germanic medieval world, focussing particularly on the legend of the Signs before Doomsday in the Old English, Middle High German and Old Frisian tradition.

She has also explored the tradition of the lapidaries in Anglo-Saxon England, in light of their relationship with the scientific works surviving in the manuscripts dated between the eighth and the twelfth century, highlighting their pedagogical function and their usage in the monastic schools. In particular, she has analysed the oldest English lapidary (London, British Library, Cotton Tiberius A iii), as well as the earliest lapidary written in German language, the Lapidary of Prüll (Clm 536), drawing attention to its practical function within the context of the so-called Fachliteratur of medieval Germany.

Currently, she is editing a volume that collects the proceedings of the workshop entitled "The Limits of learning", held in Leeuwarden (27th June – 1st July 2007), in the context of the joint international project Storehouses of Wholesome Learning: Accumulation and Dissemination of Encyclopaedic Knowledge in the Early Middle Ages (Palermo – Leida – Groninga).
