Postdoctoral Researcher (100%, E13 TV-L, 4 years)

The Chair for Sinology with a focus on the Intellectual and Cultural History of China — Institute for Near Eastern and East Asian Languages and Civilizations — at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany) invites applications for the position of a Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) with an interest in the global/transregional history of quantification and/or modern or contemporary history of science in China, in particular statistics or predictive sciences.

The position is part of the interdisciplinary project “Quantification and Prediction from Europe to East Asia” funded by the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Foundation (2021–2026). In cooperation with the IKGF (International Consortium for Research in the Humanities) at FAU this project is going to focus on political and historical epistemologies of statistical production and forecasting practices and their global/transregional circulation. Together with the other project members the applicant will conduct research and contribute to an online encyclopedia of critical terms of predictive sciences. Other tasks include:

  • coordinating research activities in the project (research seminar, fellow invitations)
  • support for the organization of conferences and project related publications
  • collaboration in preparing an application for third-party funding (e.g. ERC grant, Emmy Noether Programme)

Together with the other project members the applicant will conduct research on the social, political and cultural conditions of quantification in China in a global/transregional perspective. The Postdoctoral Researcher will further contribute to an online encyclopedia of critical terms of quantification.

The successful candidate is expected to have the following qualifications:

  • a PhD in Chinese studies, historical sciences or related disciplines,
  • strong interest in the role of quantification and prediction in science and society,
  • preferably research experience in China, Hong Kong and/or Taiwan,
  • experience in interdisciplinary and international research contexts,
  • excellent knowledge of working languages English and Chinese.

The position is to be filled by October 1st, 2021, the prospective duration of the project is five years. Yearly budget will be provided to support archival research and international conference participation.
