Mantic Arts in China II - Handbook Series

June 21-22, 2017

Location

IKGF Seminar Room, Building D1
Hartmannstraße. 14,
91052 Erlangen

The International Research Consortium "Fate, Freedom and Prognostication. Strategies for Coping with the Future in East Asia and Europe" at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg would like to welcome you to our workshop "Mantic Arts in China (II)" on July 21st and 22nd, 2017. Mantic arts have long been dismissed as "superstitious" or "irrational". However, this rejected knowledge not only sheds light on the history of science and technology, but also helps us to understand the wide range of human activities that are yet to be seriously considered in many scholarly fields. Last July, we had our "Mantic Arts in China" conference in order to launch our publication series: Handbook of Prognostication and Prediction in China.
This follow up workshop is specially focused on the introductory volume of the series: Part 1: Introduction to the Field of Chinese Prognostication. The purpose of this volume is to open the field of Chinese prognostication as well as to answer the question of why prognostication matters in various fields of Chinese studies and humanities in general. The volume contains two parts: 1. General introductions to aspects of Chinese prognostication (its history, significance, etc.); 2. Surveys of research on prognostication in various fields, or "states of the field". This workshop is particularly dedicated to the general issues and difficulties that the contributors have encountered through writing their chapters.
